The Real Purpose Of Social Media In Business

When starting a business, you wouldn't give your heat and hydro a sales goal. That doesn't make sense does it? To say "Heat and hydro cost $350 per month, and therefore just by providing heat and hydro we should bring in $350 worth of business" is absolutely crazy. It misses every other part of business.

You cannot be in business unless you have a product or service to sell: that is essential to business. Period. Every single business has a purpose, a problem to solve, a need or want to fulfill.

Successful People Are Not Created

I write about things that happen in my daily life, real life experiences.

Today I received yet another email promising me that if I wanted to be successful I should sign up and pay a certain amount of money to the person emailing me, in order for them to create my success or transform me, and then I would be successful. Really? Can someone actually "create" me? I thought I was already created - since I was born.

Sabotaging Your Success

What is success? For some, it’s a feeling you get when you’ve done the best you can and you feel good about the outcome. For others, it’s something tangible, materialistic, or concrete like a bigger house, better car, or grander vacations. No matter how you define success, it’s an all-around great feeling we all strive to have.

3 Mistakes Small Business Owners Make...

that stop them from spending time with their families.

1. Limited networking events

2. 9 -5 mentality

I'm presenting at the SBCN Kid Friendly Networking Event in Kitchener, Ontario and I hope you are attending.

If not, this is a little tease as to what you are going to miss about my presentation :)

Tis The Season For Setting New Business Goals

Although I find the end of the summer the best time of the year for making new business goals, most entrepreneurs take advantage of the New Year to write down some new goals for their business. I believe as many do, if you don't take the time to decide where you are headed in your business, you stay exactly where you are.  The whole purpose of owning a business is to ensure you are progressing in the growth and services you offer your customers. We aren't meant to uphold the status quo - if we did, we could almost guarantee business failure.

Goal Setting

My wife and I were recently on a cycling vacation in Tucson, Arizona with friends.  One of the suggested rides at the local bike store was tackling the ascent of Mount Lemmon.  This sounded like a challenge but one worthy of pursuit.  We decided that our goal would be to ride halfway to the summit.  This represented an elevation change of about 3000 feet over a distance of approximately 12 miles (20 km).

The Tale Of What We Measure: Bhutan, Gdp And The Riddle Of True Progress

Last week I was lucky enough to attend Ignite Waterloo, a lively and well-organized evening conference event which I would describe as TED on speed. Presenters each get five minutes only! Thirteen presenters dazzled us with their stories that evening.  Incidentally I absolutely recommend the Ignite experience - similar events are held all over!
