Social Media - Don'T Jump In Head First

I love all the new technologies, social media opportunities, YouTube, Facebook, Pinterest, to name a few of the amazing resources offering us tools to help us build our business, which in turn can lead to our continued success.

The problem arises when we jump in head first before we have a plan of action, have a strategy, or know the simple answers such as Why? How? What? It is easier to promote a non-professional video for instance, than to take the time to research, learn, or hire someone. The goal is to ensure you have a professional and well thought out video which in turn will promote your professional image.

It's not a race, if you are new to social media, YouTube, Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, to name a few, you can't in all honesty take them all on, they will defeat you. If you have been experimenting with online resources and not seeing any improvement where your online credibility is concerned, or even sales, you are not measuring your success, or failure effectively.

It's better to be great at one thing than mediocre at everything.

  • Plan your online strategy. Research which platform you would like to use first, and know why this is and how to use the platform effectively for your business. Do not compare how you use social media to others, you have a different business, personality, and business plan.
  • Conquer one social platform at a time. It's not a rush. Ensure your profile, your bio, your brand is clear and stands out from the crowd. Know how to engage, share, like, add content, everything that can lead to your success online.
  • Consistency is the key. Don't show up one day to LinkedIn, for instance, throw out a few articles, like a few things and then disappear for months. You need to be memorable, and you need to be consistent, when you post, how you post and with whom.

If you are already using most of the resources online and you are happy with the outcome, carry on, job well done. If not, be honest with yourself, you might have to start all over again, but that proves your true worth. If something is worth doing, do it well, from day one.

Jumping in head first to try something is not a bad idea, IF you do it quietly and behind the scenes. You don't have to announce to the World you are here, you are online, you can do a couple of things:

  • Observe
  • Listen
  • Learn

No one will notice you and that's OK, versus noticing you for the wrong reasons.

Ultimately, if you want to test the water, why not gently feel how hot it is first, then decide how brave or foolhardy you are and take it from there.
