When Good Web Sites Go Bad

As small business owners, a web site is critical for many of us. But what happens when your web site inadvertently gets hijacked to attack it's visitors? As devious as this sounds, it's happening.

Many small business web sites have recently been subjected to just this scenario. Information Security researchers (including myself) have been digging into this latest round of issues. What makes it somewhat unique is that the exact method by which the web sites are hijacked is still somewhat unknown. Further still, the actual attack that the site then launches against visitors is quite sophisticated; trying 8 or more different attacks.

To protect yourself, ensure your anti-virus application is up-to-date and importantly make sure you have the latest recommended patches to both your computer Operating System (such as Windows) but also critical applications that you use. In this specific instance, Apple QuickTime is a vector for the attack. If you have iTunes installed, you have QuickTime -- so make sure you update it to help protect against this (and many other) attacks.
