The Skills Section On Your Linkedin Page

A question came up this week when I was presenting on a popular topic - LinkedIn.

The question was "How does the Skills portion of LinkedIn work".

On my LinkedIn page the Skills section comes after Experience and before Projects.

About 184 people have chosen to tick the box Social Networking as my 1st and most recognized skill-set

About 101 people have chosen to tick the box Leadership as my second top skill-set.

What does this mean? Well it could mean that people are "tick happy" and tick any box that comes along to make them look good in my eyes, and then I, in return tick their boxes.

But, I believe my connections on LinkedIn really know me, the real me, and this is because they follow me, like what I post, comment and share, and generally engage with me in many ways. I gain clients via LinkedIn because of my awesome LinkedIn profile and the information on my page.

They have chosen to showcase my top skill-set and they are right! Social Networking, which encompasses most of what I do for both my businesses, is what I want to be recognized for!

People often say "But you are a professional speaker, surely that should be at the top of your Skills"?.

No - it's obvious that I am a speaker, and my brand is strong. But my clients know what my speaking topics are, what workshop topics I cover and how I can help them in many ways. I am not tied to one topic, Social Networking covers many areas. I am not tied to one type of conference.

The Skills section should not be confused with the Recommendations section, they are quite different things.

But, if your connections do not KNOW what your top skill set is, it could be because you are not showcasing it and you are confusing your connections with your profile, headline and other sections on LinkedIn.

Are you happy with your LinkedIn presence? Why not join this conversation and offer tips or questions?
